RAZORFISH HELPS VISITORS NAVIGATE CHAOS OF GROUND ZERO THROUGH CREATION OF ONLINE MEMORIAL HOSTED BY LOGICWORKS
Pro-Bono Project Provides Access to Online Map, Outlining Evolving Ground Zero Site for Visitors
Who: Razorfish, Inc. (NASDAQ: RAZF), the digital solutions provider, has created a website for the “Around Ground Zero” map designed to orient visitors to site where the Twin Towers and neighboring buildings of the World Trade Center collapsed.
With the recent completion of the recovery efforts, Razorfish and the map’s creators hope the site will serve as an historical timeline and archive of the area referred to as Ground Zero.
Around Ground Zero was first created in December as a print map, detailing the World Trade Center site and the surrounding area in lower Manhattan. The project grew out of discussions held through New York New Visions, a temporary coalition of architects and designers that came together to conceptualize responses to the events of September 11th.
Architect and Princeton University professor Laura Kurgan, the map's creator, has been working with the Temporary Memorials Committee since September. Many individuals within the group felt that an immediate symbol of remembrance was needed, more quickly than the timeline of any built memorials would allow.
What: Created as part of a pro-bono project, Razorfish today launched aroundgroundzero.net. The online map focuses on the geography and architecture of the Ground Zero area. Additional detail explains the clean-up and recovery efforts, shifting public access and viewing platforms, temporary memorials, and changing landmarks of the Ground Zero landscape.
Four interactive quadrants provide an inventory of damaged buildings, as well as information about accessible streets and views, boundaried zones, suggested walking paths, and memorial sites. The map also documents the exact location of the construction zone and activities in it access routes into and out of it police stations and firehouses and practical information about subway and bus options, for the thousands of tourists and visitors who pay tribute to the area weekly.
Why: The map was created in the interest of facilitating reflection and remembrance of the Ground Zero area. It attempts to address the physical disorientation many visitors have felt when viewing the site. As the Ground Zero landscape continues to change, the website will evolve as well.
How: The site uses Flash to enable an interactive experience with the map. In addition to the information available upon first entering the site, many map elements are associated with detailed content on the history and alterations to the landscape. Users can view this material by using a mouse to "roll over" areas of the map, or by selecting specific map sections to zoom in or topics to further explore.
The site has been built to work most effectively with Internet Explorer versions 5.0+ and Netscape Navigator 4.7+ and requires a Macromedia Flash plug-in.
To download the PDF version, your computer also must have Adobe Acrobat installed.
Journalists: We invite you to visit the website, and would love to offer you a personal demonstration and/or interview with the creators of the site and the map itself.
Quotes for Media: “Because visitors often get lost—relying on small posted FEMA maps or on stationed police - I envisioned the print and online maps to serve as a practical guide to the physical area, as well as a memorial document,” said Laura Kurgan, architect and Assistant Professor of Architecture at Princeton University. “In this way, Around Ground Zero addresses people who visit the site to bear witness, whether to add to the spontaneously evolving memorials or simply to observe.”
“The physical space of Ground Zero is both physically and emotionally difficult to grasp,” said Thomas Muller, vice president of experience design at downtown Manhattan-based Razorfish and contributor to the online project. “The goal of the online map is to provide a point of reference to the tragic events of 9/11 and to create an evolving archive of the day that changed our landscape forever.”
